Permanent Residency in Chile

Stop renewing paperwork. We calculate your eligibility, protect it from the mistakes that reset the clock, and file the application.

What this involves

Permanent residency (permanencia definitiva) removes the renewal treadmill: you can live and work in Chile indefinitely, change employers freely, and start counting toward citizenship. It is granted after a qualifying period holding temporary residence, and the application must be filed within a window tied to your current permit.

Two things sink otherwise valid applications: time spent outside Chile, and gaps between permits. Both are counted precisely, and both are easy to accumulate without realizing. We audit your travel history and permit chain before filing rather than discovering the problem in the resolution.

What we handle

Eligibility audit

We reconstruct your permit history and count your days in and out of Chile against the applicable rules, so you know whether you qualify now or in six months.

Filing window control

The application has to be lodged inside a specific period relative to your temporary permit. We diarize it and file within the window.

Document preparation

Updated criminal record certificates from Chile and abroad, proof of the activity that sustained your temporary residence, and tax or contribution records where required.

Response to requirements

Migration frequently requests additional evidence. We answer within the deadline, which is where self-filed applications most often fail.

Post-grant registration

Registration with the Policía de Investigaciones and issuance of your definitive Chilean ID card.

02

Power of attorney

Granted at a Chilean consulate or apostilled where you live. It lets us act for you in Chile without you travelling.

03

We file, you get updates

Our attorneys handle the filings and appearances in Chile. You get plain-English updates at every stage.

Permanent Residency — common questions

What English-speaking clients ask us most about this specific service.

How long do I have to live in Chile before applying?
It depends on the category of temporary residence you hold — some routes qualify sooner than others. What matters as much as the elapsed time is how much of it you actually spent in Chile, since extended absences can interrupt the qualifying period. We calculate your specific date rather than quoting a general figure.
Do trips outside Chile hurt my application?
They can. Permanent residency assumes an effective link to Chile, and prolonged or repeated absences undermine that. Short trips are normal and expected; long stretches abroad are what create problems. If you travel frequently, get the count reviewed before you file.
Does permanent residency expire?
It does not expire in the way a visa does, but it can be lost — most commonly through prolonged absence from Chile without the corresponding authorization. Keeping it alive is straightforward once you know the rule; losing it by accident is unfortunately common among people who move back abroad.
Is permanent residency the same as citizenship?
No. Permanent residency lets you live and work in Chile indefinitely but you remain a foreign national — you keep your passport and you do not vote in most elections. Citizenship is a separate application, filed later, and it is what gives you a Chilean passport.
