The court that handles Chile's everyday infractions

Every comuna in Chile has at least one Local Police Court, which hears traffic-law infractions, municipal ordinance violations and consumer protection complaints under the summary procedure of Law 18.287. These courts also decide certain civil claims that arise alongside an infraction — most commonly, a demand for damages after a traffic accident, heard within the same case rather than a separate lawsuit.

We review the citation or notice you received, explain in plain English what it actually means and what is at stake, and represent you at the hearing — whether that means contesting the facts, raising a defense, or negotiating a reduced fine.

Local Police Court in Chile — common questions

The questions English-speaking clients ask us most about this area.

What is the Local Police Court and what does it decide?
Every municipality in Chile has one or more Juzgados de Policía Local — courts that hear traffic-law infractions, municipal ordinance violations and consumer protection complaints, among other matters, under the procedure set out in Law 18.287. They also hear certain civil damages claims connected to those infractions, most commonly from traffic accidents.
I received a traffic ticket in Chile — what are my options?
Depending on the facts, you can accept the infraction, raise a legal defense against it, or request that the fine be reduced. We review the citation and the circumstances before recommending which route gives you the best realistic outcome.
Can I claim damages from a traffic accident in the same proceeding?
Yes. When a traffic accident causes injury or property damage, Chilean law allows the damages claim to be brought within the same infraction proceeding before the Local Police Court, rather than as a separate lawsuit — which is generally faster.
Can a Local Police Court decision be appealed?
Yes, where the law permits it, an unfavorable first-instance judgment can be appealed to the Court of Appeals. Deadlines are short, so the decision on whether to appeal needs to be made quickly once the judgment is issued.
